Environmental and Ecological Approach in the Restoration of Historical Monuments

Abstract Architectural heritage preservation requires more attention to save historical monuments as it protects the distinctiveness of country. However, large portions construction and demolition waste come from renovation sector. As such, need for eco-friendly materials is a necessity decreasing environmental impact processes such carbon footprint global warming. The study aims use geopolymeric paste potential alternative renovating architectural elements in Al-Attar Mosque, Tripoli, instead cementitious that environment. mix design geopolymer consists metakaolin sodium-based alkaline solution. used bind very old sandstone rocks provided by historic mosque. mechanical properties natural were tested with without different cutting conditions. In most samples, cracking occurred stone itself not binder. This behaviour proved binder good be wall, holding properties. has monuments. It also an environmentally friendly material, lower than concrete.
